The Most Paradisiac Resorts in French Polynesia

Last update: February 7th, 2026

Tahiti, or more officially, French Polynesia, has sent out a siren song to everyone from Paul Gauguin to Marlon Brando to scores of honeymooners lolling on the motus (reef islets) of Bora Bora. The draw is that turquoise lagoon and tropical lushness coupled with the rich, exotic local culture and touches of French style.

French Polynesia has much to offer in terms of relaxation and romantic experiences. Here our selection of the best resorts in the country.

1) Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora

Scattered along the Bora Bora lagoon and famed for its ice blue water and multicolored fish, the 107 overwater and beach villas are positioned to take in the vivid sunsets and view of towering Mount Otemanu, the island’s extinct volcano.

Resort guests often choose to stay in for breakfast on their decks, watching the trays being delivered in Polynesian canoes. Otherwise, meals in the three restaurants vary among Asian, French and Polynesian. Between meals, guests can spend their days relaxing by the outer lagoon or a shallow inner lagoon that can feel like a life-sized aquarium.

2) The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort

Around the bend from the Four Seasons, the St. Regis Bora Bora Resort boasts the largest overwater villas in the South Pacific, starting at 1,550 square feet. Of the 89 villas, the crown jewel is the Royal Estate, a 13,000-square-foot compound surrounded by coral with its own private beach.

Among the four restaurants is the French/Asian Lagoon Restaurant by Jean-Georges, and the spa is affiliated with the French skin care company Clarins.

3) The Brando

The atoll of Tetiaroa, 30 miles north of the main island of Tahiti, was a sanctuary for Polynesian royalty for centuries. Ten of the 12 motus that comprise the atoll have been left in pristine condition as a nature preserve containing white sandy beaches, thickets of coconut palms, a sanctuary for tropical birds, a rainforest, a seashell-shaped pond imbued with local legends.

The Brando is on the motu Onetahi: 35 bedroom villas (with one to three bedrooms) built in Polynesian style, constructed in wood covered with pandanus leaves. Guests can book the Brando Residence which is a three bedroom, 3,000-square-foot house on 1.25 acres of land and a private beach. All houses and villas have their own pools.

4) Conrad Bora Bora Nui

The resort presides over a half-mile-long white-sand beach (the largest of any Bora Bora hotel) on the southwest end of Motu To'opua, a small islet 20 minutes by boat from the main island.

With a sweep of white sand bordering impossibly blue sea and a clutch of thatch-roofed overwater villas perched on wooden piers, the resort looks like a computer screensaver come to life. Because you can’t see any other properties from here, the hotel feels particularly private, with a tranquil vibe that even extends to poolside, where the only sound is water spilling over the infinity edge. Suites and villas are decorated in a sleek, contemporary style using neutral colours that let the exteriors assume the spotlight.

5) Le Taha'a Island Resort & Spa

The resort offers stylish luxury in a relaxed island environment. Polynesian architecture and décor feature throughout, and the overwater bungalows and villas are built with local materials and feature traditional thatched roofs. Le Taha'a Island Resort & Spa is set in spacious grounds on car-free Motu Tautau, filled with lush tropical vegetation and encircled with white sand.

There are 58 suites and villas, including 45 overwater bungalows. These are categorised by their location and views, which include sunset, mainland Taha’a, and Bora Bora.
